A proclamation issued at the building\u2019s dedication said this about Uncle Chan: \u201cHe fought for expansion of opportunity for black children with tenacity blended with wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, though not surprisingly, a half-century earlier Uncle Chan\u2019s mother, Addie Jackson, had argued for more recreational opportunities for black youth in Tarrytown, NY where Uncle Chan was born and raised.<a href=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-31-at-10.40.47-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-304\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2019-01-31 at 10.40.47 PM\" src=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-31-at-10.40.47-PM.png\" width=\"169\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-31-at-10.40.47-PM.png 352w, https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Screen-Shot-2019-01-31-at-10.40.47-PM-207x300.png 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Addressing an advisory group set up in the early 1900s to make recommendations for improving the village, Momma Addie said this: &#8216;There is no recreation for colored boys and girls in Tarrytown. The civic league does wonderful work, but outside of that there is no means of recreation provided for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/unc-chan-runs-track.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-293 alignright\" alt=\"unc chan runs track\" src=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/unc-chan-runs-track-1024x738.jpg\" width=\"283\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/unc-chan-runs-track-1024x738.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/unc-chan-runs-track-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/unc-chan-runs-track-415x300.jpg 415w, https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/unc-chan-runs-track.jpg 1031w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Legendary High School Athlete<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the early 1920&#8217;s, Uncle Chan was a legendary high school athlete at Washington Irving High School in Tarrytown, NY., where he starred in football and track and field.<\/p>\n<p>A 1961 newspaper article in the Tarrytown Daily News (N.Y.) recalled this headline from a Nov. 24, 1921 issue of the paper: \u201cChan Jackson Makes 65-Yard Run for Touchdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a common occurrence for young Jackson to make exceptional long runs and win games within seconds of the final period,\u201d the article says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_291\" style=\"width: 161px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-291\" class=\"wp-image-291  \" alt=\"IMG_0008\" src=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0008.jpg\" width=\"151\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0008.jpg 737w, https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0008-251x300.jpg 251w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Uncle Chan with his sons Clarence Channing Jackson III and Douglas.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His \u201cterrific burst of speed and his ability to twist, turn, weave and dodge were executed quicker than the bat of an eyelid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upon his graduation from Washington Irving in 1922, a newspaper editorial said this: \u201cWe are frank to admit that it will be some years before another Jackson is discovered. He is a wonder-athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_290\" style=\"width: 149px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290\" class=\"wp-image-290 \" alt=\"IMG_0006\" src=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_0006.jpg\" width=\"139\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Uncle Chan&#8217;s wife, Aunt Lucille.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Uncle Chan went on to star in track at Springfield College in Massachusetts and would later coach the first women\u2019s track team to compete internationally.<\/p>\n<p>While in college, Uncle Chan worked as a \u201cred cap\u201d at Grand Central Station in New York City during summer recess and the holidays. He would later call it a \u201ctremendous experience\u201d where he met famous people from around the world, learned about various people and their personalities, and watched gangsters being \u201ctaken up the river\u201d to Sing Sing Prison.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_287\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan0245.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-287\" class=\" wp-image-287  \" alt=\"Scan0245\" src=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan0245-1024x744.jpg\" width=\"280\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan0245-1024x744.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan0245-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan0245-412x300.jpg 412w, https:\/\/roger-glass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Scan0245.jpg 1380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clarence Channing Jackson Jr. is honored at a dinner in Tarrytown, NY where he was hailed as one of the greatest athletes ever at the town&#8217;s Washington Irving High School.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clarence Channing Jackson Jr. saved his best and most important victories for the 1930s, 40s and \u201850s when he was a supervisor in Baltimore\u2019s Department of Recreation. It was there that Uncle Chan used his talents and upbringing to fight segregation and create unprecedented opportunities for Baltimore\u2019s black kids and families.
